Uniontown High School recieves visit from Mobile Lab
Students in Carla Lowden's Uniontown High School biology class recently conducted scientific investigations in the the Mobile Lab from Pitt University. The Mobile Lab—a self-contained, traveling laboratory that allows students to use current, high-end equipment to perform laboratory investigations—is the latest exciting addition to a very active K-12 science education outreach effort sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh Department of Biological Sciences. Students practiced micropipetting while learning about natural selection. During the natural selection experiment, students competed two different harmless non-pathogenic strains of Salmonella bacteria against each other to see which one was more successful at evading be eaten by a amoebae predator. The experiment tested a new hypothesis about how humans and animals succumb to bacterial infection.
